Tree felling work is being carried out around Ludwig-Erhard-Platz. The Ludwig-Erhard-Platz area to the west of Dr.-Weinholz-Straße will be affected on 19 February, followed by the Ludwig-Erhard-Platz area to the east of Dr.-Weinholz-Straße on 20 February. An additional no-stopping zone will be set up beforehand. The tree felling work is related to the redesign of the entire area and must be carried out before the breeding and setting season on 1 March. Twenty-one trees will now be felled and replaced by 29 new ones within the areas of construction phases 2 and 3: A total of 50 trees will be planted in the entire area from the community centre to Nieuwpoorter Strasse. All new trees will be given optimised site conditions: Planting pits adapted to the size of the trees with suitable substrate, targeted irrigation of the root zone via aeration pipes and networking of the planting pits via root trenches. The trees are also supplied with water via drainage channels in an environmentally friendly and resource-saving manner. The trees and other planting in the new square are intended to divide up the overall area into smaller spaces, thereby increasing the quality of the space and its utilisation. When selecting the new trees, the urban planning department deliberately favours varieties that are resistant to the urban climate. These are better prepared for the expected more difficult climatic conditions, such as drought, heat waves and heavy rainfall events. In future, there will be 19 Japanese string trees, 8 silver lime trees, 5 narrow field maples, 8 European hop hornbeams, 2 white ash trees, 3 red ash trees, 4 bladder ash trees and 1 flowering ash tree. With the improved conditions, the trees can grow taller than before and thus provide more shade in summer in the long term. Most of the old trees are not in good condition due to unfavourable site conditions, such as very small tree discs or compacted root spaces. The trees at the post office also have to be removed so that the entire square can be made barrier-free without steps.
