Concepts
The concepts for design, mobility and mixed use show how the centre around Puiseauxplatz is to be developed in a holistic and sustainable way.
Design concept for the public space
The neighbourhood centre around Puiseauxplatz requires an overarching design development idea. Design elements such as surface design, greenery and shading, lighting, furniture and water features play a key role in shaping the public space. To this end, the concept has established design principles and made suggestions for future remodelling of the development area. Puiseauxplatz was analysed in depth.
The ROB planning group from Schwalbach was commissioned to develop the concept. As a prelude, a public participation (charette process) took place in September 2023, in which over 100 ideas and wishes were collected from citizens. The results can be viewed here and were incorporated into the design concept.
Charette procedure
- What could Puiseauxplatz look like in the future?
- What should definitely be retained, what would you like to see?
As part of the "At home in the centre" development programme, a charette was held directly on the square on 20 September 2023 at 6 pm.
A charette process is a public planning method for urban and regional development with the direct participation of citizens. The wishes and ideas of the citizens for the design of Puiseauxplatz were collected together and a sketch plan was drawn up on this basis on site.
The result of the collaboration:
- Dismantling of the existing fountain and construction of a ground-level water feature with water and mist jets in the central square area
- Creation of a seating area (seating island) with a sun sail to provide shade at the water feature
- Installation of a drinking fountain in the area of the water feature
- Unsealing of the area under the plane tree grove, installation of a water-bound surface and creation of a multifunctional recreation and rest area with seating islands and (toddler) play equipment, offer as an activity area (Speakers Corner...)
- Unsealing of the edges of the square and creation of green and flowering areas in the area of the existing tree locations to increase the degree of greening, strengthen biodiversity and improve microclimatic conditions, creation of shaded seating and resting areas
- Additional tree planting at the edges of the square to increase the degree of greenery and shading options
- Planting of two large-crowned solitary trees at the transition to Obere Marktstraße ("green gate" to the square)
- Installation of illuminated columns to guide the pathways crossing the square (Rodensteinstraße, Obere and Untere Marktstraße) and to adequately illuminate the square area in the evening hours
- Relocation of the existing group of figures of the fountain to a publicly effective location in the access area from the upper Markstrasse
- Integration and upgrading of the existing outdoor catering areas in the overall concept
The design concept was approved by the city councillors in September 2024. The following initial measures are to be implemented:
- Greening of the access area from Obere Marktstraße (creation of flowering areas and seating, planting of a solitary tree)
- Creation of peripheral flowering areas at Puiseauxplatz 4/7 (creation of flowering areas and seating, planting of a solitary tree)
- Creation of marginal flowering areas at Puiseauxplatz 2/2a (creation of flowering areas and seating)
- Creation of a flowering area with tree planting Access to Untere Marktstraße (creation of flowering areas and seating, planting of a solitary tree, installation of bicycle stands)
Sub-spatial mobility concept
The sub-spatial mobility concept is intended to provide building blocks for the mobility of tomorrow. In particular, the routes to the centre of Nieder-Röder and to Puiseauxplatz are to be considered and sustainable forms of mobility placed in the foreground. The concept aims to promote the mobility behaviour of local residents towards environmentally friendly mobility through a combination of measures. In particular, the parking space situation is to be analysed and both sustainable and customer-friendly measures are to be developed.
The specialist firm Habermehl & Follmann from Rodgau Nieder-Roden was commissioned to draw up the concept. The sub-spatial mobility concept was approved by the city councillors in September 2024.
The following initial measures are to be implemented:
- Bicycle parking spaces: Creation or expansion of bicycle parking spaces in the subsidised area - if possible with roofing and sufficient lighting
- Cycle lanes: Redesign of Wiesbadener Straße, Krümmlingsweg and Otzbergstraße (the passage for motor vehicle traffic will be opened)
- Restructuring of Frankfurter Straße / Lichtenbergstraße: guidance of cycle traffic, if possible, on hard shoulders
- Redesign of Untere Marktstraße: Creation of an "entrance gate" by increasing the quality of stay and extending the shared footpaths and cycle paths
- Redesign of Obere Marktstraße: widening of the walking areas in front of the shops, reorganisation of the parking areas and improvement of the quality of stay through redesign
Mixed-use strategy concept
The development of a utilisation concept serves the targeted, sustainable development of the centre. The aim is to create a standardised vision that facilitates cooperation between stakeholders from the retail sector, politics, administration, volunteers, citizens and property owners. To this end, a space management system with a utilisation concept has been devised. This supports the development of subsequent utilisation and interim utilisation concepts. Particular attention should be paid to the existing vacancies around Puiseauxplatz. Imakomm AKADEMIE from Stuttgart was commissioned with this task. The completed concept was presented to the city council in December 2023.
The strategy is made up of three central elements, the details of which can be found in the utilisation concept (especially in chapters five and six):
- Strategic directions for the centre of Nieder-Roden
- Concrete core measure per strategic thrust
- Recommendation for the future organisation of the structures for the strategic thrusts
