Declaration of loss of a passport or identity card

  • Service description

    As a German citizen, you are obliged to have an identity card from the age of 16 if you do not have a valid passport. If your ID card has been lost or stolen, please report the loss immediately to an ID card authority (Lord Mayor/Mayor), a citizens' office or the police for your own protection. You are obliged to do so in accordance with § 27 Paragraph 1 Number 3 of the ID Card Act. If you do not report the loss, you are committing an offence under Section 32(7) of the ID Card Act.

    Once you have registered, you can apply for a new ID card. If you have a valid passport, you do not need to apply for a new ID card.
    If you report the theft to the identity card authority or citizens' office responsible for your place of residence or to the police, the online ID card will also be blocked.
    You can also have the online ID card blocked yourself by telephone. The telephone blocking hotline is available around the clock, seven days a week, on the toll-free number 116 116 from a German landline or mobile phone.
    Blocking ensures that any attempted misuse is recognised immediately. After blocking, it is no longer possible to use the online ID function of your ID card or to have it read out on site.
    You can only have the signature function blocked by the provider of your signature certificate.
