  • Service description

    If you have German citizenship and move back to Germany from abroad, you may not automatically be entered on the electoral roll for the European elections.

    This depends on when you re-registered in Germany after your return. If you did this after the 42nd and before the 20th day before the election, you must apply in writing to be entered in the electoral roll.

  • Procedure

    • You register with your municipality of residence after the 42nd day but before the 20th day.
    • You declare in lieu of an oath that you are entitled to vote and declare that no application for entry in the electoral roll has been made elsewhere.
    • The authority will decide on your application and send you an election notification or a rejection notice.

    To the municipal or city administration responsible for your place of residence (main residence).

  • Prerequisites

    You can register on the electoral roll for the European elections as a German of legal age or as a German of legal age without voting disqualification after your return from abroad if you:

    • register in Germany after the 42nd day but before the 20th day before the election
    • are returning to Germany as a German or German national from a Member State of the European Union or
      have lived outside the Federal Republic as a German or German national and are returning to Germany if they have had a home or their habitual residence in Germany for at least 3 months after their 14th birthday and this was no longer than 25 years ago or
      are returning to Germany as a German or German national from other countries if they have acquired personal and direct familiarity with the political conditions in Germany for other reasons and were affected by them
  • Which documents are required?

    Declaration in lieu of an oath of eligibility to vote and declaration that no application for entry in the electoral roll has been submitted elsewhere

    The application for entry in the voters' register as a returnee must be submitted from the 41st to the 21st day before the election.
