Remembrance Day – Exhibition & discussion session: ‘Fled, displaced – settled?’
The National Day of Remembrance commemoration will take place for the first time in a new format, featuring an exhibition and a panel discussion. The theme is ‘Fled, displaced – arrived?’, and the event is dedicated to those who were forced to leave their homes – both in the past and today.
Exhibition from 3.30 pm
The exhibition is on display in the foyer of the town hall and is dedicated to the flight and expulsion of Germans during the Second World War. It highlights the mechanisms behind forced migration, but also shows how people coped with their new circumstances.
Discussion session from 5 pm
The participants in the discussion, held in the town hall’s main conference room, then bridge the gap to the present day. During the discussion, those affected and their relatives have their say and talk about their experiences, their loss and their new start in a completely unfamiliar place.
The group includes
- Reverend Hermann Differenz and Sigrun Kraus
- Mahmoud Haji from the organisation ‘WISA – We Have Arrived’
- First City Councillor Janika Martin
Through this event format, the city aims to shed light on historical events and, through this lens, examine current problems and potential solutions, with a view to halting similar dynamics in good time.
Before that, a wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the cemetery in Weiskirchen at 12 noon.
