  • Service description

    In Hesse, the municipalities are responsible for defensive fire protection and assistance in their area. In particular, they must set up, equip, maintain and deploy an efficient fire brigade appropriate to the local conditions. In towns with more than 100,000 inhabitants, a professional fire brigade must be set up.

    Fire brigades have to fulfil preventive fire protection tasks and help people and animals in the event of fires, accidents or other emergencies.

    Only persons who are in good health and have reached the age of 17 but not yet 60 can be active members of volunteer fire brigades (if it is in the interests of the service, the period of service can be extended beyond the age of 60 for a certain period of time, but not beyond the age of 65, at the request of the volunteer firefighter).
