Foreign driving licence (not EU/EEA): rewrite
Service description
Holders of a valid foreign driving licence may, after taking up residence in Germany, drive motor vehicles in Germany within the scope of their entitlement for as long as the foreign driving licence is valid, but for no longer than a further 6 months. If a motor vehicle is to continue to be driven in Germany after this period, a German driving licence must be issued on the basis of the foreign driving licence (so-called transfer).
Procedure
The application must be made in writing.
Which documents are required?
- Official proof of place and date of birth (e.g. identity card, passport)
- A current biometric photo (size 45x35mm, portrait format, frontal view). Information and examples can be found in the photo sample table (Bundesdruckerei).

What fees are incurred?
The amount of the fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
The transfer must be applied for as long as the foreign driving licence is still valid.
The transfer of a new driving licence acquired abroad after taking up residence in Germany is not permitted.
