  • Service description

    You can extend your category B driving licence under certain conditions. With the key number B96, you may drive category B motor vehicles with a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg, provided that the maximum authorised mass exceeds 3,500 kg but does not exceed 4,250 kg. The key number B196 allows you to drive motorbikes (also with sidecars) with a maximum cubic capacity of 125 cm³, an engine power of no more than 11 kW, where the ratio of power to weight does not exceed 0.1 kW/kg. To do this, you must complete the relevant driver training course in accordance with Annex 7a (key number B96) or 7b (key number B196) of the German Driving Licence Ordinance (FeV).

  • Procedure

    You complete the relevant driver training course in accordance with Annex 7a (key number 96) or Annex 7b FeV (key number 96). When applying for registration, proof of driver training in accordance with the model in Appendix 7a or 7b must be provided. A new driving test is not necessary.

  • Prerequisites

    For the extension by the key number 96:

    • You must be at least 18 years old, or 17 in the case of accompanied driving
    • You must have completed a driver training course of at least seven hours and be able to provide proof of this (at least 2.5 hours of theoretical training, at least 3.5 hours of practical training)
    • You must be in possession of a category B driving licence or meet the requirements for obtaining one


    For the extension by key number 196:

    • You must be at least 25 years old
    • You must have held a category B licence for at least five years
    • You must complete nine 90-minute teaching units (four theory units and five practical units) and be able to provide proof of this
    • The period between completion of the driver training course and registration of the key number 196 must not exceed one year

    The driving licence authority charges fees in accordance with the scale of fees for road traffic measures.
