    Landscape protection includes all measures for the special protection and maintenance of nature and landscape in a particular area.

    The objectives are to preserve, develop or restore the

    • Performance and functionality of the ecosystem,
    • regenerative capacity and sustainable utilisation of natural assets,
    • Diversity, uniqueness or beauty of the landscape,
    • special cultural and historical significance of the landscape,
    • particular importance for recreation.

    In order to protect landscapes, certain parts can be declared landscape conservation areas. In these landscape protection areas, all actions that change the character of the area, impair the landscape or the performance and functionality of the ecosystem or run counter to the special purpose of protection are prohibited.

    Landscape conservation areas are designated in order to preserve or restore the typical natural character of the area and to safeguard it for use by future generations.

Who should I contact?

The higher nature conservation authorities are responsible for the designation of landscape conservation areas. Citizens can contact the Lower Nature Conservation Authorities at the district administrations or the municipal authorities of the district-free cities. Please enquire there for further information.
