If you want to register a new vehicle for road use for one day, you must apply for a day registration at the registration authority.

  • Service description

    Would you like to register a new vehicle for one day on the road? Then you must apply for a day registration at your local registration authority. A day registration is the first registration of a vehicle subject to registration. It is valid for the duration of the day for which you have applied for the day registration.

    You can apply for a day licence as:

    • Citizen
    • Companies, for example
      • Car dealership
      • Fleet operators
      • Insurance
      • Automobile club
      • Authorisation service provider

    If you have a day registration, your licence plates for that day do not require any stamp stickers or sticker holders. If you use the vehicle on public roads, you must display the temporary registration certificate in the vehicle so that it is clearly legible from the outside. This also applies to unlocked vehicles. In the case of motorbikes, you can, for example, place the certificate in the tank bag with a transparent window or in a transparent cover attached with adhesive tape.

    As soon as the date of first registration has expired, the vehicle is deregistered without any further application on your part. You are then no longer authorised to drive the vehicle on the road.

    You cannot travel abroad with a day registration.

  • Procedure

    If you apply for day registration on site:

    • You or your representative submit an application for day registration of your new vehicle to the local vehicle registration office.
    • The following data is recorded on site during the day registration:
    • for natural persons:
      • Surname, maiden name, first name
      • Order or artist name, if applicable
      • Date and place of birth or, if this is not known, country of birth
      • Gender and address
    • for legal entities and authorities:
      • Name or designation
      • address
    • for associations of persons (e.g. partnerships, corporations, registered associations):
      • Representation with data of natural or legal persons
      • Name of the association
    • As part of the procedure, an automatic check is carried out for:
      • Motor vehicle tax arrears
      • Fee arrears according to the respective state law
    • After a successful one-day registration, you will receive a provisional registration certificate and the vehicle's licence plate number from the registration authority.
    • You have the licence plates made.
    • Once the licence plates have been affixed, you can use your vehicle immediately until the end of the day.

    • The vehicle is subject to registration.
    • The vehicle has not yet been registered.
    • The vehicle has the following certificates:
      • For EU type approval, certificate of conformity
      • In the case of national type approval, registration certificate part II with registered type and variant/version key number
      • For individual vehicle authorisation Certificate of individual authorisation
    • You have no significant outstanding fees and expenses from previous authorisation processes.
    • You have no significant motor vehicle tax debts. This also includes late payment penalties, interest and late payment penalties.
    • In Hesse, you may not have any outstanding fees and expenses over 10 euros.
