Motor vehicle: Registration certificate - Change holder data (name/address)

  • Service description

Changes to the holder's details (personal changes), e.g. change of name due to marriage or divorce and change of address, must be reported to the licensing authority immediately.

The vehicle owner is obliged to report this. If he is not also the owner, he is also obliged to do so.

The changes are entered both in the registration certificate - Part I (vehicle registration document) and in the registration certificate - Part II (vehicle registration document).

If only the address changes within the registration district, the registration certificate part II does not have to be presented. In these cases, either a new registration certificate Part I is issued or a corresponding sticker is affixed to the previous registration certificate Part I. There is no change to the registration certificate Part II.

If you have bought or leased your vehicle on credit and the lender or lessor has retained the registration certificate Part II (vehicle registration document) as security, contact them so that they can submit the document to the registration authority for amendment and as proof of authorisation to dispose of the vehicle.

  • Which documents are required?

    • Registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document)
    • Registration certificate part II (vehicle registration document)
    • For companies: additional business registration and, if applicable, extract from the commercial register
    • Identity card or passport (with confirmation of registration or current registration certificate)
    • For foreign citizens: foreign passport and registration confirmation or current registration certificate

If you appoint a third party, they will need a written authorisation from you. They must also present your identity document (original) to the registration authority. They must be able to identify themselves with a valid identity card/passport.

  • What fees are incurred?

The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt).

  • Legal basis

  • What else should I know?

Before the vehicle documents can be changed to your new name or address, you must re-register at your local registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt).

The authorisation authority automatically forwards the change notification to the responsible main customs office.
