Applying for a temporary driving licence with an existing licence

  • Service description

    You can add a category C, CE, C1 or C1E, D, DE, D1 or D1E driving licence to your existing licence.

    The driving licence for categories C, CE, C1 or C1E, D, DE, D1 or D1E is issued for a maximum of five years and can be extended by five years at the request of the licence holder.

  • Prerequisites

    • You must have reached the minimum age required in accordance with § 10 FeV.
    • You must provide proof of your eyesight and a medical certificate confirming that you are physically and mentally fit to drive a lorry.
    • For D classes, you must also present a certificate of good conduct. If you are over 50 years old, you must also submit a performance psychology report for D classes.
  • Which documents are required?

    • Official proof of place and date of birth (e.g. identity card, passport)

    • a current photograph that complies with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance (biometric, size 45 mm x 35 mm, portrait format)
    • Proof of eyesight in accordance with the model in Annex 6 No. 2 to the Driving Licence Ordinance. You can have the certificate issued by an ophthalmologist, a company or occupational physician or a doctor from the health authority. A certificate issued is valid for 2 years.
    • Proof of physical and mental aptitude in accordance with the model in Annex 5 to the Driving Licence Ordinance. You can have the certificate issued by any doctor. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application.
    • In addition, for categories D, D1, DE, D1E, if you have reached the age of 50, a performance psychology certificate. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application. You can have the certificate issued by any doctor. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application.
    • for D classes: Police clearance certificate for submission to an authority (document type O)

    The fee is based on the current version of the scale of fees for road traffic measures.

    The issue of a driving licence can be applied for at the earliest six months before reaching the respective minimum age authority.
