Apply for compensation from the animal disease fund

  • Service description

In certain cases, you will receive compensation from the state and the animal disease fund for animal losses, e.g. for animal losses due to notifiable diseases, officially ordered culls and damage as a result of official control measures. Compensation is based on the provisions of the Animal Health Act. You can receive compensation payments for privately, professionally or commercially kept animals of the following species:

    • Horses, donkeys, mules, hinnies
    • Cattle (including bison, bison and water buffalo)
    • Pigs
    • Sheep
    • Goats
    • Poultry
    • Game
    • Bees and bumblebees
    • Fish that are not kept for ornamental purposes

The basis for the amount of compensation is the general value of the animal. This is the amount of money (excluding VAT) that you would have to spend to purchase an equivalent animal on the day of the loss. This is based, for example, on the prices of breeding stock markets. The value of the animal does not change if the animal is ill, for example suffering from an epidemic. Different maximum rates per animal apply depending on the species. Fish are compensated if they are killed by official order in the event of the occurrence of exotic fish diseases and the other requirements under animal disease law are met.

  • Procedure

You must inform your local veterinary office immediately if you suspect an epidemic.

Once you have complied with the animal health measures ordered, you can submit your application to the veterinary office. One such measure is, for example, the culling of individual animals or the entire herd. The veterinary office will then check and process the application and submit it to the animal disease fund.

The application form can also be downloaded from the Tierseuchenkasse website.
