Types of waste

Waste separation and avoidance are still the main objective. Waste paper (blue bin), organic waste (green bin) and residual waste (black bin) as well as recyclable materials with a green dot (yellow bag/yellow bin) are collected directly from you, while other recyclable materials, such as glass, must be taken to collection centres.

What types of waste are there?

Waste paper (blue bin)

  • What belongs to waste paper?
    • Paper
    • Cardboard
    • Cardboard packaging
  • What does not belong in waste paper?
    • Wallpapers
    • Tetra packs
    • Pizza boxes (delivery service)
    • sandwich paper
    • Photos
    • Carbon paper
    • papers coated with films
  • What do I need to bear in mind when collecting waste paper?

On the dates specified in the waste calendar, waste paper must be placed in the "blue bin", in cardboard boxes or bundled at the kerbside by 6 am. Paper placed in plastic bags or similar containers will not be taken away.

The waste paper bin is emptied every four weeks on the dates specified in the waste calendar.

Waste paper can also be handed in at the recycling centre in normal household quantities (0.25 m³ per week) during opening hours.

  • Which waste paper bin can be ordered and how?

The order is placed by the owner using the"bin order" form. Orders are accepted by the waste management department, the Stadtwerke Customer Centre and the Citizens' Service.

    • For residual waste containers up to 120 litres > a free waste paper bin with 240 litres
    • For 240-litre residual waste bins > two waste paper bins with 240 litres each
    • For residential complexes with larger residual waste containers (e.g. up to 1,100 litres) > up to two 1,100-litre waste paper containers

Biowaste (green bin)

  • What belongs in the organic waste bin?
    • Leftovers and spoilt food
    • Fruit and vegetable waste (including tropical fruit and peel)
    • Garden waste e.g. leaves, lawn and green cuttings, weeds(in small quantities)
    • Tea and coffee grounds with filter paper
    • Bouquets, ornamental plants (without metal or plastic binding material or sleeves)
    • Old potting soil(in small quantities)
    • Kitchen towels, serviettes
    • Nutshells and eggshells
    • Cooked meat and fish products(in small quantities)
    • Sausage products
    • Edible fats in solid form
    • Hair, feathers(in small quantities)

Wet, rotten and odour-intensive materials should be wrapped in kitchen paper or newspaper (not glossy paper)!

    • Cigarette residues and cigarette ash
    • Hoover bag
    • High gloss papers
    • Raw meat and raw fish
    • Glass
    • Faeces from dogs, cats and other pets as well as cat and rodent litter
    • Metals (cans, nails, etc.)
    • Road sweepings
    • Plastics(including no compostable plastic bags or packaging)
    • Maize starch bags
  • Is it compulsory to have an organic waste bin?

No, use of the organic waste bin is voluntary.

    We recommend its use,

    • as the organic waste bin is in line with the circular economy concept
    • is provided free of charge
    • more precise separation reduces cost-intensive residual waste
    • waste disposal charges can be kept low through utilisation
  • Do I need an organic waste bin?

The organic waste bin is primarily intended for households that cannot compost themselves.
You should still use the option of home composting or the local green waste composting plant (exclusively for green waste), as these disposal methods best correspond to the natural cycle of biological recycling of waste and mean local, low-cost recycling.

  • Which organic waste bin can be ordered and how?

The order is placed by the owner using the"bin order" form. Orders are accepted by the waste management department, the Stadtwerke Customer Centre and the Citizens' Service.

    • For residual waste containers up to 120 litres > one free organic waste bin with 120 litres
    • For 240-litre residual waste bins > one 240-litre organic waste bin
    • For residential complexes with larger residual waste containers (e.g. up to 1,100 litres) > a maximum of four organic waste bins per 240 litres
  • What should I watch out for in hot or frosty weather?

Make sure that your container is protected from frost or is not placed directly in the sun.

    • In winter, you can use newspaper to prevent organic waste from freezing in the container
    • Frozen organic waste must be loosened independently by the bin user before emptying, this is not done by the refuse collectors
    • There is no subsequent emptying of frozen organic waste bins
    • If maggots appear, it helps to sprinkle lime powder (seaweed lime or slaked lime) into the organic waste bin. These can be purchased from building materials stores or well-stocked drugstores
    • In good weather, the lid should be opened, as dry and ventilated organic waste is unlikely to be infested by maggots
  • How often can the organic waste bin be emptied?

The organic waste bin is emptied every 14 days on the disposal dates specified in the waste calendar. The organic waste bin must be clearly visible by 6 a.m. on the day of emptying.
