Change of residence
Service description
If you move, you must register for your new home.
For children up to the age of 16, the person whose home the children are moving into must register them. If necessary, the consent of the person with custody is required.
Procedure
To register, you must complete and sign a registration form and submit it together with the documents listed under "What documents are required". You must submit/present these documents in person or authorise another person with the appropriate power of attorney to submit/present them.
Depending on the municipality's offer, you can choose not to fill in the registration form and request the data from the registration office in the form of a pre-filled registration form. You then only need to check the data on the corresponding printout, correct it if necessary and then confirm the accuracy of the data by signing it. From 01.05.2022, the registration authority is obliged to use this procedure.
Family members and members of a civil partnership should use one registration form if they move from a shared home to a new shared home on the same day.
Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation of registration.
If the office responsible for your new place of residence has opened Internet access for registration, you can also use this access to submit the required information using a qualified electronic signature.
You cannot use this service if you
- move in from abroad or
- use a pseudonym instead of your name in your electronic signature.
In these cases, you must log in as described above.
Responsible office
The responsibility lies with the registration authority.
Which documents are required?
- Identity card, temporary identity card, replacement identity card, recognised and valid passport or passport replacement document as well as the confirmation of the landlord corresponding to the allocation feature according to § 19 para. 4 of the Federal Registration Act if the person obliged to register has reached the age of 16
- corresponding identity documents of the family members who are registered together on one registration form
- for children: Children's passport or birth certificate
The registration authority may request the submission of further documents to verify the information (e.g. birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree).
What fees are incurred?
There are no fees. If you do not fulfil your obligation to re-register or do not do so on time, you are committing an administrative offence that can be punished with a fine.
Legal basis
What else should I know?
To be able to vote in an election in the municipality, you must have lived in the municipality for at least three months and be eligible to vote. If you register with a municipality as your main place of residence, you will automatically be entered in the electoral register for the next upcoming election or vote. Special rules apply to the European elections for foreign EU citizens.
