Residence permit for the purpose of training Issued for the purpose of preparing for and studying at university

  • Service description

You can obtain a residence permit for the purpose of studying if you wish to study in Germany and have been admitted to a state-recognised higher education institution or a comparable educational institution in Germany. The course of study must be full-time.

The purpose of residence for the purpose of studying also includes study preparation measures. Study preparation measures are

    • attendance of a preparatory language course if admission to a degree programme has already been granted and admission is conditional on attendance of a preparatory course, and
    • attendance at a preparatory college or comparable institution if a place is definitely available.

The residence permit for the purpose of studying is a temporary residence permit. It is issued for a minimum of one year and usually for a maximum of two years or for the duration of the degree programme if it lasts less than two years.

If the foreigner participates in an EU or multilateral programme with mobility measures (e.g. ERASMUS+ programme of the European Union) or if an agreement between two or more higher education institutions applies to the foreigner, the residence permit will be issued for at least two years or for the duration of the course if the course lasts less than two years.

With your residence permit for the purpose of studying, you may work up to 120 days or 240 half days per year or take on a part-time student job. You are not allowed to work during preparatory study programmes in the first year, except during the holiday period
